Meet Our Doctors

Dr. Dennis Calvano

Growing up in Lake Ronkonkoma, New York, Dennis Calvano knew he wanted a career that would enable him to help people lead healthy and happy lives. Shortly after graduating from high school he joined the U.S. Navy as a Hospital Corpsman which enabled him to work in and gain experience in various areas of health care. After deciding on a career in dentistry and receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy he remained in the Navy Reserve while earning his Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of California, San Diego. He then headed back east to Temple University School of Dentistry in Philadelphia to earn his Doctorate of Dental Medicine.

Dr. Calvano began his dental career in the U.S. Navy where he completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency in July of 2000 at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, South Carolina. He spent the next three years as part of the 2nd Dental Battalion at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. During his time with the Marines, Dr. Calvano was proud to be deployed to the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean, and Afghanistan with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

In 2007, Dr. Calvano earned his Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD). To achieve this honor, dentists must take more than 500 hours of educational courses in various areas of dentistry and must pass a rigorous exam. Dr. Calvano is one of only 7 percent of AGD dentists who have earned an AGD Fellowship. In 2011, Dr. Calvano completed an extensive continuing education series in orthodontics with Progressive Orthodontic Seminars.

Dr. Mike McKinney

Mike McKinney is a native of Johnson City, Tennessee, but has been in the Rockbridge County area since 1998.  Dr. McKinney graduated as a business major from Southern Virginia University where he played football and was student body vice-president.  Prior to attending SVU he served for two years in Ireland as a missionary for his church. After graduating from SVU, Mike was a Boy Scout professional for the State of West Virginia and then a teacher at Rivermont School in Lexington.  Not feeling either of those professions should be his life’s labor; he decided to go back to college and prepare to work in the health care profession.  While working as a volunteer on a Remote Area Medical project to provide medical and dental care to indigent families in Southwest Virginia, Mike was given an opportunity to assist a dentist.  He fell in love with the profession and turned all his efforts towards becoming one who could use his natural mechanical and artistic skills to help others with their dental challenges.  As a result Mike graduated as Dr. Michael McKinney from Roseman University of Health Sciences in Utah.  While at Roseman, Dr. McKinney worked as a volunteer providing dental treatment to the homeless in Salt Lake City.
